This Month's Featured Gardens
Each home we maintain has its own individual features and needs, but all are uniquely Richmond. We develop a plan with each homeowner to achieve the look and feel they desire.
The Fairy Tale Cottage
Nestled in Richmond's Windsor Farms neighborhood, this charming cottage in its woodland setting may just be harboring the three bears.
-
Shade gardens abound, with beds chock full of flowering shrubs and vines, perennials, and hedges.
-
Boxwood are thinned and plucked from within to ensure light and air circulation inside the plant. Gentle shaping results in boxwood that are fluffy and natural, but not unkempt.
-
Yew hedges are a welcoming visual element along the front fence. In late winter, we thin it to reduce overall density before gently shaping and reducing height in preparation for the Spring flush.
-
Several varieties of azaleas add a burst of color in Spring. Immediately after blooming they are pruned to promote maximum bud set for the following year.
-
Hydrangeas including Oakleaf, Limelight and Endless Summer varieties are pruned in late summer following blooming. Pruning early and heavily at the right time will rejuvenate and strengthen.
-
Camellias include both spring and autumn varieties for year round enjoyment.
-
The jasmine vines around the gate and front door require regular thinning and detangling.
-
The homeowner prefers pine straw mulch in back bed areas to mimic an untouched, earthen floor.
-
Beautiful mature oaks produce a large volume of leaves, which are redistributed to natural areas.
English Boxwood Estate
Registered with Virginia's Department of Historic Homes, this property's expansive and impressive formal gardens have been featured on Richmond's Garden Week tour.

A classically designed English boxwood garden with bluestone pathway is the show-stopping backyard feature.
